Cross­ing shut as lor­ries crash

A crash be­tween two lor­ries closed the Dart­ford Cross­ing in both di­rec­tions and caused traf­fic chaos in the county.

The two HGVs col­lided just be­fore 3pm on Tues­day, near the Queen El­iz­a­beth II Bridge in Thur­rock halt­ing all traf­fic head­ing into Kent.

Later, traf­fic was also stopped in the op­po­site di­rec­tion head­ing to­wards the Dart­ford Tun­nel to al­low the air am­bu­lance to land.

The ac­ci­dent hap­pened as the lor­ries were ap­proach­ing Junc­tion 31 on the M25 and left one of them on its side on an em­bank­ment. The other suf­fered sub­stan­tial dam­age to its cab.

Swedish flat­pack fur­ni­ture man­u­fac­turer IKEA of­fered beds to more than 200 peo­ple who were stuck in the traf­fic close to their Lake­side su­per­store.

Po­lice, medics and the air am­bu­lance were all in at­ten­dance and the road was not fully re­opened un­til 5.45am on Wed­nes­day.

Es­sex Po­lice con­firmed both driv­ers were be­ing treated for mi­nor in­juries, no ar­rests have been made.
