There’s a new face in Maidstone’s Town Hall.

Cllr Karen Chappell-Tay (pictured right) was welcomed by the mayor, Cllr Dave Naghi, as she took her seat at her first full council meeting.

The Conservative, from The Street, Ulcombe, was elected to represent Headcorn at a by-election on September 13.

She received 686 votes - 277 more than her nearest rival Merilyn Sandford (Lib Dem).

Jim Grogan picked up 63 votes for Labour and Derek Eagle 40 for the Greens. The turn-out was 28.9%. Mrs Chappell-Tay replaces Shellina Prendergast (Con), who quit the borough council in July. She remains a Kent County Councillor for Maidstone Rural East.
