MUSIC enthusiasts were able to celebrate the Chinese new year in style on Saturday, with a special concert at St Mary’s Church in Ashford. The internationally-recognised performers of the UK Chinese Music Ensemble were performing their repertoire of modern and classical Chinese music, as part of the Equator music project. This series of concerts, organised by Tenterden-based musician Priti Paintal, is bringing virtuoso performers from all over the world to the borough, including her own group, ShivaNova. Priti said: “I’ve been in Tenterden since 1992, and we’ve gone to play everywhere else in the county, but never Ashford, and now finally, fingers crossed, it’s taking off.” The next event in the series sees the Multistory Theatre Company putting on a production for all the family at Brake Hall in Ashford School this Saturday. Tattercoats blends traditional songs and music from the Far East with computer animation, acting and dancing.

All tickets are £6, and the performance begins at 5pm. To book, call 01233 629165 or visit www.shivanova.com
