Three arrested after ram-raid attempt is foiled by police
THREE men have been arrested and two police officers hurt after an attempted ram raid at a supermarket.
An orange Daewoo digger was driven into the Sainsbury’s supermarket at New Romney 3.15am yesterday, wrecking the awning and the front of the store.
It is the latest in a string of such incidents in the area.
A Toyota Land Cruiser had been driven through the car park wall and two 4x4 vehicles were found on the scene - one with the roof removed.
Police officers who were near to the scene arrested three men aged in their 20s and 30s and are looking for a fourth.
During the arrest two officers suffered broken ankles, one of which also suffered a broken leg and may need surgery.
The attempted cash machine raid comes in the week Kent Police offered a £30,000 reward for information leading to the charging and conviction of those responsible for recent cash machine thefts in the county. See page 13.
