‘Affordable’ homes plan wins approval
Town centre housing development aimed at first-time buyers
A NEW development which will provide affordable housing on the outskirts of Ashford has been given the go ahead.
The development will be built on brownfield land in West Street and East Street.
It will provide 48 affordable homes ideal for first-time buyers on a shared ownership basis.
These will be a combination of one-bedroom and two-bedroom flats and three-bedroom maisonettes.
There will be two three-bedroom houses.
The homes will also be available for local people to rent as housing association properties.
Two properties in East Street will be demolished to make way for the development.
Approval was given at a meeting of the planning committee on Wednesday.
The plans came before councillors in January but a decision was deferred due to concerns about whether the building would be imposing on neighbours and the skyline.
A sunlight study was then carried out after neighbours complained the seven-storey building would block out natural light.
However, the study showed this would not be the case and that the building would not be taller than other buildings in the town.
