‘It was a lot quieter than I expected’

Kentish Express Ashford & District - - LYDD NOISE TRIAL -

OPINION among the 150-strong crowd who came to watch the trial fight at the airport was generally positive about the expansion. Julian Hall, of Skinner Road in Lydd said: “I was always in favour of it, and it was quite a lot quieter than I thought it was going to be.” Malcolm James from Greatstone said: “The planes are noisy, but not too noisy. In fact, when I’ve been here in the summertime on the beach, you don’t take any notice of them. “I can’t see why people don’t want it in the area. It’s a good thing. It’s about time Lydd was put on the map. It’s got such potential for an airport. “I don’t think anything is bad if it generates work.” Janet Edwards, from Lydd, said: “I was impressed with the quietness of it. Everyone thought it would be incredibly noisy, but it’s quieter than the tiny aeroplanes they have here. “I’m more for than against the expansion, but I don’t think today was a proper demonstration because the plane wasn’t full of luggage and people. “The other thing is I’m not listening in my back garden.” Lydd town councillor Clive Goddard said: “I’ve lived in Lydd all my life and the airport’s not an issue. I’d like to see more of the jets.” Nigel Mitchell, another FLAG member, said: “I’ve lived here for 30 years and the people who are leading the antis are new arrivals. Who are they to tell us what’s best for the area? The airport will open the door to regeneration.” Della Middleton said: “We’ve got to look at bringing employment into the area. People who retired here knew there was an airport. “I feel sorry for them, but unfortunately we’ve got to live and work and pay our bills. She added: “I’m just looking forward to my first flight to Malaga.”
