THE head of road safety at the AA says removing traffic lights from busy roundabouts can be the road to chaos. Andrew Howard said: “Generally traffic lights go on a roundabout because the flow doesn’t work. “Because we give way to the right, while everyone going one way will say it’s wonderful, people going the other way may not. “Every time someone turns into a road, they create a gap for someone to leave and if the traffic turning in doesn’t outnumber the traffic going out, you could end up with big queues of people trying to get out.” Mr Howard also warned that queues at traffic lights can catch up with you. “You can discover that all the traffic stops 100 yards up from the roundabout at the next set of traffic lights and you end up with queuing around the roundabout.”
