This waste would bankrupt rest of us

Kentish Express Ashford & District - - OPINION -

RE: Your article on Ashford’s council tax rate for the coming year (March 1). A rate of 4.85 per cent is not anywhere near the lowest reported (4.2 per cent I believe) and in fact is only 1.5 per cent below the figure which could trigger intervention by the Government as being excessive. Also, compared with the increase in standard state pensions of 3.6 per cent for retired taxpayers, they will need to try to tighten their belts even further. Or raid their precious, diminishing savings, which were intended for slim comforts in “old age”. The profligacy of all councils is legion – how many of their already well-paid staff were given bonuses at the end of last year? And what had they done beyond their normal easy services to deserve that? The dreadful waste of time and our monies on the rehashed leisure centre is another matter which sticks in our gullets. And who dreamed up the stupid and expensive “Gateway” scheme in the centre of high-value commercial space in the centre of the town? If any firm or individual carried on as these people do, they would quickly find themselves bankrupt. P. O’Keeffe, Turners Avenue, Tenterden.
