ON COURSE: MP attends official opening of study centre
THE number of people signing up to acquire new skills at the Learn Direct centre in Ashford is on the increase. And to find out for himself about the centre’s success, the town’s MP Damian Green visited students and staff on Friday at its official opening in Park Mall shopping centre. He was told by manager Lee Fowler that since opening last October, student numbers had increased from five a week to a current weekly total of 100. The centre has 10 computer workstations, enabling learners to benefit from more than 500 online courses. Backing them up on site are three tutors at any one time. “Many of the fees are fully funded or very heavily subsidised by Government,” said Mr Fowler. “I’m delighted with the interest being shown in Ashford. The reputation of the place has just grown.” Mr Green commented: “It’s so important for people to learn at their own pace and this centre provides that opportunity. “I think that the jobs that will come to Ashford will require many skills like IT and the opportunities to learn are essential.” Pupils at the centre are helped with a wide range of subjects, including basic maths and English, computer skills, household budgets, job applications and interviews.
