Kentish Express Ashford & District - - FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT -

PRODUCED in Kent is a marketing organisation set up to raise awareness of Fairtrade for farmers and producers in Kent. People in Ashford are being urged to use farmers markets, independent stores and farmers shops to support the local economy and save rural jobs and businesses. Many small businesses in the Ashford area struggle to survive and often rely on outside support, as demonstrated by Poulton Wood Works. Lynn Cooke, of Poulton Wood, said: “Anyone trying to make a living from a small piece of land will have difficulty with competitive pricing and the understanding and support of consumers counts for a lot. “Poulton Wood Nature Reserve is owned and supported by Canterbury Oast Trust and if we had to rely on the small amount of money made from the sale of our products we would not be able to operate.” Simply Ice Creams, The Chilli Bite, and the Coop are all examples of businesses who actively support Kent producers and have been offering free tastings at various venues throughout Fairtrade Fortnight.
