Fa­ther stole to pay off drug dealer

A COURT heard how an Ash­ford man was driven to crime af­ter re­ceiv­ing threats from his drug dealer.

Dar­ren Owen, 27, of Clyn­ton Way, ad­mit­ted tres­pass­ing at Tyre Web in Vic­to­ria Road, and steal­ing four al­loy wheels, three car stereos and cash on Fe­bru­ary 17 this year.

He also ad­mit­ted driv­ing while dis­qual­i­fied and with­out in­sur­ance on the same date.

Owen had smashed a win­dow at Tyre Web and was picked up by po­lice shortly af­ter the of­fence cov­ered in scratches.

Duane Bridger, de­fend­ing, said Owen had been un­der enor­mous pres­sure to pay off debts from a co­caine habit and was be­ing threat­ened by his old sup­plier.

Owen had started tak­ing co­caine to help him cope with look­ing af­ter his three-year-old son who was re­cov­er­ing from se­vere burns, but had now given up the habit.

Owen was sen­tenced to 180 days in prison, sus­pended for 18 months. He was or­dered to pay £200 com­pen­sa­tion and £60 costs.
