French system has got to be better

Kentish Express Ashford & District - - OPINION -

S. DONALD (March 8) asks what the French do when bad weather or strikes cause Stack to be implemented. Twice I have been in France under such conditions and both times the French police line the trucks up along the (rather narrow) hard shoulder. With a large police presence, one lane at least was kept moving at all times. The police here say they don’t have sufficient manpower to monitor such a system, in which case surely some traffic officers could be brought in from other counties? It is we – local people – who suffer for what is caused by a national situation. I think all drivers would accept one lane with a 50mph limit in use on the coast-bound M20 has got to be better than the present method of forcing through traffic on to the inadequate capacity of the A20.
