Waste of taxpayers’ money

Kentish Express Ashford & District - - OPINION -

HOLDING a poll is a waste of taxpayers’ money, according to the boss of Lydd Airport. Managing director Zaher Deir has criticised members of Lydd Airport Action Group (LAAG) for orchestrating the referendum. He said: “If these people have their way the local councils for Lydd and New Romney will be forced to foot the cost of holding these polls. These authorities have not budgeted for these referendums so will they be forced to cut their spending in other areas, causing inconvenience and even suffering for local communities.” Mr Deir believes that KCC and Shepway council carried out sufficient public consultation before they developed their structure plans. He added: “Would KCC and SDC have included Lydd in their development plans if they thought that local community life would be ruined? “Both KCC and Shepway have spent a lot of taxpayers’ money on these detailed plans. They wouldn’t waste their time, money and effort on all this research if they had not taken all the issues into account.” The airport boss said that to be representative, polls would also have to be held in all other parts of Shepway, including Hythe and Folkestone, and he added: “We believe that this ploy is an abuse of local democracy.”
