RESIDENTS BACK REFERENDUM
AT A public meeting in New Romney 166 people voted in favour of a parish poll on the Lydd Airport expansion plans. The meeting, chaired by prospective parliamentary candidate Damian Collins, had to be moved to St Nicholas Church because the Assembly Rooms were not big enough. The meeting, held on Friday night, was opened by Mark Skilbeck, who told the public that the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of New Romney, Cllr Clive Wire and Cllr Sally Maycock, were unable to attend. Only residents on the electoral roll for the coastal and town wards in New Romney parish were eligible to vote on the proposal to call a parish poll, which will cost New Romney Town Council up to £4,000.
