Could you be this year’s Miss Ashford?
Carnival organisers are looking for the next Miss Ashford
THE search is on to find a new Miss Ashford in time for the town’s carnival this summer. Girls aged between 13 and 16 are being encouraged to put themselves forward for the role of carnival queen, or one of the two princesses. The winning trio will take pride of place on the top float, heading the carnival procession through the streets of the town. They will also represent Ashford at a host of parades and other events across Kent during the summer. A selection dance will be held in Singleton village hall, in Hoxton Close, on Sunday, April 15, when the judges will make their choices. Entrants must live in the TN23, TN24 or TN25 postcode areas. Ashford carnival will go ahead on Sunday, July 15, despite controversy this time last year when most of the organising committee stepped down.
Despite the setback, Brenda and Terry Dickinson are still organising the event, which they have been running since the 1970s. Ashford town centre manager Viv Kenny is taking charge of the administration and registration. She has already received several applications from people wanting to enter floats. Ashford Museum will also be hosting an exhibition on the history of the carnival. It will run from April 1 to the end of September and will be open from 10am to 1pm, Monday to Saturday. Anyone interested in becoming Miss Ashford should call Brenda Dickinson on 01233 623969 or enter using the form on this page. To enter a float in the carnival, call Viv Kenny on 01233 664410.
