PERFECT TIMING: Young Farmers watch Orla’s arrival
STUDENTS were delighted by a new addition to the school farm. The Young Farmers’ Club based at Brockhill Park Performing Arts College in Hythe watched school cow Olivia give birth to a healthy calf. The calf has been named Orla and will be shown by pupil Toby Parrett at the Kent County Show in July. Club leader Donna Hawkes said: “It was fantastic that the students had the opportunity to watch. Often the cows give birth at night when it’s quiet, but Olivia timed her new arrival just right – with five minutes to go until registration she gave birth. “Seeing the birth is excellent experience for their animal care studies and we were also able to video the event for teaching purposes.” The public will be able to meet Orla at the club’s annual lambing day, to be held at the college farm, Sandling Road, Saltwood on Sunday, April 1, between 10am and 4pm. New attractions this year include the Invicta Arachnid Club and Port Lympne Wild Animal Park both bringing tarantulas and snakes.
