Academy show a stun­ning suc­cess

PUPILS from the Ash­ford­based Show­biz Academy staged their Mu­si­cal Mad­ness show at the Woodville Halls Theatre, in Gravesend on Sun­day watched by the Mayor and May­oress of Ash­ford, Cllr Norman and He­len Ayres, and the civic heads of Grave­sham, Cllr. Harry Smith and Mrs Iris Smith. It in­cluded excerpts from many mu­si­cals in­clud­ing Our House (based on the hits of Mad­ness), Les Mis­er­ables, Billy El­liot, Sweet Char­ity, Bar­num, Sis­ter Act, Chicago. The Daz­zling Dis­ney set which in­cluded Beauty and the Beast, Mu­lan, Lit­tle Mer­maid, Snow White and Poc­a­hon­tas and Mary Pop­pins cul­mi­nated in a We Will Rock You med­ley for the finale. Once again they re­ceived many com­pli­ments from pro­fes­sion­als in the au­di­ence about the high stan­dard of the show, and the pupils re­ceived a stand­ing ova­tion. Pa­tron Trevor Clar­ing­bold of BBC Ra­dio Kent helped back­stage and then spoke to the au­di­ence just prior to the finale say­ing how proud he is to be as­so­ci­ated with Show­biz Academy but there was sad­ness that due to prior com­mit­ments their other pa­tron Paul O’Grady was un­able to at­tend. Prin­ci­pal Rachel Dick­son ex­pressed her pride in her pupils. Suc­cess­ful pupils this year in­clude Francesca Sin­den, 15, who beat off thou­sands to get to the re­gional fi­nal of South Coast Idol, El­liot Wood, who will be go­ing the pres­ti­gious Arts Ed­u­ca­tional Per­form­ing Arts School in Tring and Sam Humphreys who will be play­ing the Art­ful Dodger in FH­ODS pro­duc­tion of Oliver later this year. Many of the pupils took part in pan­tomimes through­out Kent dur­ing the fes­tive sea­son. Classes are held in both Ash­ford and Folkestone. Full de­tails are avail­able on 01233 650045.
