AN ASHFORD water-saving project has won a national efficiency award. The project includes a demonstration of the latest water-saving technology to residents and housing developers on Hillreed Homes’ 200-house Highland Park, Ashford, development. They are also pilot testing seasonal tariffs as a way of giving residents an incentive to cut consumption. Customers are charged a lower water rate during the eight months of the year when supply is plentiful and a higher rate in the summer. County council managing director for the environment and regeneration Pete Raine received the commendation at the Environment Agency’s water efficiency awards ceremony in London last week where the project won the accolade for inspiring change. The council partnership with Mid Kent Water, Hillreed Homes, the Environment Agency and others has developed design guidance on water efficiency for housing developers. Mr Raine said: “This is testament to the hard work of all the partner organisations. With 100,000 new homes coming into water-stressed growth areas like Ashford and the Thames Gateway, we need all housing developers to adopt these water-saving measures and we need more projects like this to encourage residents to save water. “The Kent Water Demand Management Group has produced practical action that is making a real difference to people’s lives. I am pleased that our efforts have been recognised with this award.”
