Ebbsfleet’s weak links exposed

Kentish Express Ashford & District - - OPINION -

AS a result of the lineside fire at Wandsworth Road and the presence of gas cylinders, Eurostar services were withdrawn last Friday/ Saturday. My husband, who was travelling home from Brussels managed to get on a Eurostar which terminated at Ashford. I assume that the London-bound passengers simply used the domestic service. The point is that none of this would have been possible at Ebbsfleet which has NO rail connections and NO buses unless you live in Dartford. Imagine trying to find coaches for 750 passengers per train! Which station do you think offers the better service? Edith Robson (by e-mail)

THERE have been widespread protests from all over south east England against Eurostar’s proposal. To stop running direct train services between Ashford international and Brussels, as from this autumn – and to reduce services to and from Lille to one a day. At present on six days of the week there are five trains a day each way between Ashford and Brussels, all of which call at Lille, and a call at Lille each way by one of the Paris trains. There’s a good service on Sundays, too. These trains give us vital links with a large part of continental Europe. On behalf of Marshlink Action Group, I’d like to urge everyone who disapproves of these drastic cuts to join in the protest. Some of you may have already signed a written petition; if not please do sign one if it comes your way. In addition you can now also sign up to a Downing Street petition. The address on the internet is http:// petitions.pm.gov.uk/AshfordBrussels. It’s very important that we demonstrate to Eurostar, and the Government, how many people care about this issue. Richard Holmes, chairman, MarshLink Action Group
