Play recalls India’s tragic tree-huggers

Kentish Express Ashford & District - - OPINION -

CHILDREN at Hamstreet primary school have learned about Indian history while putting on a play. The lower juniors performed Amrita and the People who Hugged the Trees to the rest of the school. The play looked at the legend of Amrita Devi and several hundred villagers who gave up their lives while protecting their forest nearly 300 years ago. The Indian government has commemorated their sacrifice by naming the Rajasthani village of Khejare as India’s first National Environment Memorial. The children have been learning how people in India struggle to protect their environment, and how the Chipko Movement is supporting the protection of trees.
