Sporting stars of the Fifties

Kentish Express Ashford & District - - REMEMBER WHEN? - by Mike Bennett

THIS week we return to a sporting theme for our pictures from the past, to feature Wye football club from the 1950s. More than half a century ago they were stars of the Ashford and District league – as former players John Vidler, now 70, and still living in the village at Little Chequers, and Eric Ball from Elmsted, well remember. These photographs come from Mr Ball’s collection and between them the former soccer stars can still identify all but one of the posing players and officials. The picture with the buildings in the background was probably taken in 1950 on their pitch that was then behind the village hall. In the back row from the left are Frank Curtis, Don Jordan, Ro Hayward, Terry Barnes, Henry Luck, Alf Richardson. The mystery man is seated on the left next to Roy Punyer, Jack Howland, Tony Austin, Eric Jenner and Eric Ball. The people in the second team photograph taken about five years later were, back row from left, Sid Smith, Tony Austin, John Vidler, Blacky Wenzel, Cecil Jordan, Keith Eyles, Danny Bachelor and in the front Eric Ball, Ro Hayward, Frank Whiteman, Phil Stone and Don Jordan.
