John Cumberbatch gave new signing Ryan Andrews his debut on the right side of midfield, and he was the first to create a chance for Ashford with a deep cross that flew inches over the head of Fenwick.

Matata then unhinged the West Sussex side’s defence with a mazy run on the half-hour, but he shot into the keeper’s arms from a tight angle with Hitchings perfectly placed on the edge of the box.

However, it was Horsham who landed a double blow to the Town’s cause with two goals in four minutes.

Added to the dismissal of Porter, Town faced an uphill struggle but, to their credit, came out with renewed endeavour in the second half.

George Fenwick and Joe Hitchings both fired shots wide before Matata got the last touch after a goalmouth scramble to halve Horsham’s lead.

At the other end Horsham spurned a hatful of chances but the home side’s defence stood firm.

Town’s defeat, coupled with Godalming’s draw, means they are just one point above the drop zone.

Town are at home to Sittingbourne on Saturday and then at Croydon Athletic on Tuesday.
