Ladies battle back after early setback

Kentish Express Ashford & District - - SPORT -

Ashford Ladies 2 BBHC Ladies 1 ASHFORD Hockey Club’s ladies came from behind to finish their season with a win – but still missed out on the promotions spots by one point.

Against a team they had beaten 5-0 away Ashford conceded an early goal but responded immediately when Celia Harrison forced the ball home amid a scramble.

This was followed five minutes later by a well-struck penalty corner goal from captain Karina Greensmith.

Ashford created further opportunities but had to ensure they stayed tight to combat BBHC’s counter-attacking style. The second half was a scrappy affair lit up occasionally by pieces of individual skill, one of which saw Linda Charlton to take the ball past the keeper only for a defender to clear off the line.

Ashford felt they should have a penalty flick after a bad stick tackle but the umpire waved aside their claims.

Ashford finished the season in third place, with Sophie Hunt voted player of the season.
