British Gas spokesman Emma Powell, admitted that “erroneous transfers” had taken place in 1999 when the energy industry was new to competition. But she said there was now a code of practice in place which all staff had to follow. In a statement, British Gas said: “We are very sorry for the recent problems experienced by Ms Linden relating to a historic meter problem. We have taken immediate action to rectify the situation and confirm that Ms Linden’s credit rating is no longer compromised as a result of our error. “As a gesture of goodwill we have credited Ms Linden with £100.” Ms Powell added that British Gas would also be sending Ms Linden a full letter of apology.
