We need some forward thinking

Kentish Express Ashford & District - - OPINION -

ALTHOUGH a free leaflet on suggested cycle routes in this part of the borough is available at local tourist information and online, a forward-thinking town needs official routes radiating out just as the roads do. On a recent trip to Germany, I noticed that even the smallest villages have offroad cycle links. Back home, lack of funds seems to have created an either/or situation with maintaining the highways and all I can conclude is that we must spend more on other things such as wars. Ashford is better than many Kentish towns but the expansion should enable us to plan for all modes of transport, although I would argue that with the catalyst for expansion (the Eurostar service) halved, surely half of the earmarked green fields are now saved. This is just as well if Kent has to find room for a huge concrete lorry park. Many European towns have trams too. I still like the idea of tram lines down the middle of the tree-lined avenues that the ring road is to become with spurs to the designer outlet and cinema, giving the town a real feature – perhaps even as famous as the ring road was!
