Oast works will add to historic character

Kentish Express Ashford & District - - OPINION -

ALTERATIONS to an oast house in Biddenden have been approved, despite being contrary to planning policy. The owners of the Tenterden Road property sought permission to convert their garage into a sitting room and attic bedroom. Ashford borough council’s planning committee was last Wednesday advised to refuse the application, on the basis that it would spoil the historic character of the oast. But ward member Cllr Neil Bell questioned how much character there was to spoil. He said: “It is not classed as a listed building, sits in 10 acres of its own land and the extension will enhance what little historic character remains.” Councillors agreed that the conversion was modest and would not detract from the area.
