Switchboard operator gives line to past

Kentish Express Ashford & District - - REMEMBER WHEN? - by Mike Bennett

Church fun from half a century ago

THIS week’s pictures from the past come from Wendy Bishop of Lacton Way, Willesborough, who as the council switchboard operator for many years, was the first voice of the local authority. Mrs Bishop has lent us this pair of pictures of Ashford Baptist Institute from the 1950s that feature a number of familiar faces from over half a century ago. In the picture above, taken in 1954, she appears in the front row, fourth from the right, as Wendy Beer and also in the image are her brother Graham, and the Rev Garret standing at the back. Eagle-eyed readers will also spot a youthful Derek Smyth, minus his famous mutton-chop whiskers. He regularly features in current news columns as the Labour county councillor representing Ashford South. The picture on the left, taken in February 1954, shows the Ashford Baptist Church team from Station Road, at the annual Institute weekend party with family and friends.

Do you have any pictures from the past that you would be willing to share with our readers? If so, send them with brief details to Mike Bennett, Kentish Express Remember When, 34 North Street, Ashford, Kent, TN24 8JR.
