Job­cen­tre staff out on strike

FOLKESTONE Job­cen­tre staff joined other civil ser­vants in a strike this week.

Mem­bers of the Pub­lic and Com­mer­cial Ser­vices Union (PCS) took strike ac­tion as part of a dis­pute with the Gov­ern­ment over job cuts, pay and plans to pri­va­tise ser­vices.

About 40 mem­bers of staff from Folkestone Job­cen­tre formed a picket line out­side their of­fice on Tues­day morn­ing be­fore hold­ing a rally in the town cen­tre.

The one day strike fol­lows an­other stop­page ear­lier this year. Cus­toms and Im­mi­gra­tion staff in Dover were also strik­ing.

Si­mon Beard of East Kent PCS has worked at the Job­cen­tre for nearly 20 years. He said: “We were hand­ing out leaflets and telling the pub­lic about what we were do­ing and most peo­ple were very sup­port­ive and un­der­stand­ing.”
