Day that the clocks stopped

Kentish Express Ashford & District - - THE DAY THE EARTH SHOOK -

TIME stood still on Saturday morning.

As well as the digital clocks on bedside tables, DVD players and ovens, that were halted by the loss of electricity after the earthquake, there was another that stopped working in Folkestone.

The hands of the timepiece on the tower in the Garden of Remembrance in Sandgate Road, came to rest at just past 8.15am, when the earth tremor was felt.

The mechanism started again 12 hours later.

The inscription around the clock reads: “Trifle not, thy time is short.”
