Cathedral city gets the shakes

Kentish Express Ashford & District - - THE DAY THE EARTH SHOOK -

NO earthquake damage was reported in Canterbury but the tremor was felt throughout the city.

Stephen Dobson, 32, was in bed at his home in Hovenden Close on the Hales Place estate.

He said: “I didn’t have a clue what it was and jokingly said it was an earthquake.

“It made the whole building shake.”

Mr Dobson’s girlfriend Liz Lee added: “It was mad.”

Lee Wogan, who lives in Zealand Road, Canterbury, added: “At first I thought it was people rolling around or fighting downstairs.” Kay Gower, who lives in Whitstable, said: “I was lying in my bed and felt the bed move.

“My dad was downstairs reading a newspaper and he felt the room shake.

“The TV and the curtains moved and the dog went scatty.”

The city’s fire crews spent much of the day in Folkestone.
