As part of his sentence Bunyan was made subject to a sex offences prevention order which prohibits him from working, living and having contact with any unsupervised young person under the age of 18. Bunyan must also sign on the Sex Offenders’ Register. Judge Patience was urged by Bunyan’s counsel to impose a community-based punishment but the judge said he was unable to take such a course due to the ages of Bunyan’s victims and the prolonged and repeated abuse. “A custodial sentence is a punishment to you and serves as a warning to others,” he added. Judge Patience said he had taken into account Bunyan’s guilty pleas and his excellent references regarding his reputation in the equestrian and showjumping world. “It is clear that in the context of your work you have worked hard and industriously and in that way you have built up a successful business and have many satisfied clients,” the judge remarked. “If you lose your liberty the effect on that business and your business partner would be considerable.”
