Sally Hales, defending, said Bunyan enjoyed considerable success in showjumping at both county and international level, and had gone on to build up a successful business based on his “outstanding reputation”. She said that at the time of the abuse Bunyan was a repressed homosexual and it had taken him some time to come to terms with his sexuality. “He persuaded himself it was consensual but deep down he knew that it wasn’t and these were young men who had put their trust in him,” she added. Miss Hales said Bunyan had shown a degree of empathy towards his victims when he told a probation officer: “I have wrecked so many lives.” She also handed in character references.
