GIRLS were allowed to be as loud as they liked when they took part in an Indonesian music class. Some 180 pupils from Highworth Grammar School were given lessons in Gamelan music which uses gongs, kettles and instruments from Bali and Java. The girls were shown how the orchestra works and taught about the rules and conventions of the music as well as the culture it comes from. Head of music, Julie Moore said: “This is just one of the benefits that music specialist status brings to the school. “We are able to use funding for large groups so that students really understand music through participating in such workshops.”
