Le­gion starts plan­ning big pa­rade

ASH­FORD Royal Bri­tish Le­gion branch’s next com­mit­tee meet­ing at its Church Road head­quar­ters on May 21 will start de­tailed plan­ning for a big pa­rade through the town on Septem­ber 16 to mark the 85th an­niver­sary of the or­gan­i­sa­tion’s foun­da­tion. The spe­cial event with church ser­vices and a band pa­rade is be­ing planned by chair­man Robin Stone and his branch sec­re­tary brother John. With 150 mem­bers the branch is thought to be the old­est in Kent and was formed just a year af­ter the foun­da­tion of the move­ment at the end of the First World War. They are seek­ing spon­sor­ship for the day that is ex­pected to cost £5,000 to cover bands and road clo­sures.
