OPERATIC ORIGINS

Kentish Express Ashford & District - - SOUNDS GOOD -

BORN in 1992 Dreamdragons was the name of an opera created and produced for Ashford by people in the town after coaching by Glyndebourne Opera staff to mark the coming of the Channel Tunnel. Schools, youth and community groups, choirs, orchestras, singers, actors and dancers led by a professional creative team from Glyndebourne education staged the production in 1993. With sponsorship from Eurotunnel and this newspaper group, plus some support from Kent County and Ashford councils and South East Arts, it offered the chance to anyone who needed only enthusiasm to take part in the experience. Following that effort a small group were inspired to continue and the Dreamdragons Community Theatre Group became permanent, with a number of the original members still involved. They put on shows at Singleton and rehearse in Great Chart. The group stages productions ranging from pantomime, farce, variety shows, drama and even medieval mysteries.
