Young writ­ers un­veil their win­ning tales

THE win­ner of the Kent County Coun­cil and Kent Mes­sen­ger Group Young Writer of the Year com­pe­ti­tion has been an­nounced. Nathaniel Shaugh­nessy’s story, The Ter­ror Tun­nel, was con­sid­ered the best in creative ex­pres­sion in a com­pe­ti­tion that asked en­trants to write on the sub­ject ‘What mat­ters to you?’. Nathaniel, 10, of St Stephen’s Pri­mary School, Can­ter­bury, will col­lect his prize at an awards cer­e­mony to be held at Ses­sions House, County Hall, Maid­stone, on June 19. Run­ners-up are Su­n­isha Thapa, 10, of North Bor­ough Pri­mary School in Maid­stone; Molly Thompson, 10, of Brom­stone Pri­mary School in Broad­stairs; and joint en­trants Jor­dan Neagle and Hay­ley Brick­ell, both 10, of St Ean­swythe’s CE Pri­mary School in Folkestone, have all been in­vited to join Nathaniel at the pre­sen­ta­tion evening. Each will be pre­sented with a cer­tifi­cate and the prize of an en­graved pen, while the win­ner also re­ceives a tro­phy at the award cer­e­mony to be held on 19 June at Ses­sions House in Maid­stone. KCC chair­man-elect Ley­land Rid­ings and KCC cabi­net mem­ber for ed­u­ca­tion John Sim­monds and rep­re­sen­ta­tives from the Kent Mes­sen­ger Group will be present. Mr Sim­monds said: “Well done to Nathaniel, Su­n­isha, Jor­dan, Hay­ley and Molly. “We ap­pre­ci­ate the time and ef­fort stu­dents and teach­ers put into this type of com­pe­ti­tion and we are also very grate­ful to them.”
