The common buzzard (buteo buteo) is one of the largest birds of prey in the British Isles, with a wingspan of up to five or six feet.

Plumage is dark brown with lighter markings underneath.

Buzzards eat small animals, birds and carrion, with rabbits their favourite prey.

In the late 1950s, when myxomatosis wiped out 99 per cent of rabbits, buzzards nearly became extinct, but the population has recovered to an estimated 50,000 breeding pairs nationwide.
