‘ALLOWING HOUSING DEVELOPMENTS AROUND THE RING ROADS IS UNSUSTAINABLE’
THE report notes that Ashford town centre is affected by flooding, so land has traditionally been developed in out-of-town areas. However, the authors say: “Increasing the density of towns and cities is, in our view, significantly more sustainable in almost all circumstances than creating communities outside them. “In growth areas where development has occurred remotely from the town centre, such as around Ashford, dormitory housing developments have created areas lacking community infrastructure. “We recognise that in specific locations, such as Ashford, there are tensions between the need to protect the town centre from flooding – and therefore minimise development in an at risk location – and enable the surrounding land to act as a flood plain. But we believe the current solution of allowing housing developments around the ring roads is unsustainable.” This is why Ashford may not be the best place for housing growth, the report says.
