Fight mars fun at steam rally
POLICE and an ambulance were called to the Sellindge Steam Special event after a fight between two men resulted in the main music stage being closed down on Saturday night.
Organisers of the annual event at Hope Farm, attended by some 2,000 people, said the fracas appeared to be alcohol-fuelled and was over by the time police arrived.
Steward Cathy Double said: “We erred on the side of caution in deciding to close some of the activities on the programme a little earlier than planned.
“The trouble started when a fight broke out between two men outside the main musical stage. One of the men fell unconscious as members of the audience near the stage gathered around.
“It was all over very quickly, but the festival went on until scheduled closing time on Monday evening. We did was ensure the beer tent was shut down in the evening and also the fair rides by 6pm.”
Organiser Leslie Birch, 88, said: “It’s very rare indeed for us to have trouble at the festival. Perhaps drink got the better of some. There was also some infiltration by undesirable people.”
