Turn them off and save thousands

Kentish Express Ashford & District - - OPINION -

WITH regards to your item on traffic lights at junction 10, do people realise how much the lights will cost the ratepayers? I believe I am right in saying that each pair of traffic lights costs approximately £35,000 to £40,000 to supply and install and a further £3,000 to £5,000 per year forever per pair to maintain. There can only ever be a justification, on almost every set of traffic lights, for peak periods only but as far as I know all sets of lights in Ashford are full time. Add to this the cost to the environment, in traffic being stopped and made to wait when not necessary, and the cost to every motorist in petrol and time (this is why the fuel consumption is halved round town). I would have thought that traffic lights would only be used as a last resort. However, it would appear that this is not the case in Kent. Jim Mitchell, by e-mail.
