Lisa’s top mobile title hope

Kentish Express Ashford & District - - FAMILY ALBUM - by Nick Cullen

A FORMER Christ Church pupil is getting ready for a swanky ceremony in the City of London that could see her named as the UK’s top mobile phone salesperson.

Lisa White, 16, left school last year with seven GSCEs, and went straight to work at the Orange shop in Park Mall.

Less than a year later she has been shortlisted as one of six finalists for the prestigious Shop Idol award.

She said; “It just looked like an interesting job. I don’t think anything can really prepare you for work, you just have to jump in.

“There’s a lot to learn, as every single phone is different, but I find it really interesting.”

The job also has perks for a mobile phone enthusiast like Lisa, as she said: “I’ve got a lot at home, just a little collection.”

The competition sees sales teams from all the mobile phone networks competing against each other. Candidates are either nominated by their managers, or put themselves forward.

Lisa, who decided to take on the challenge herself, was put through her paces by a mystery shopper, and then grilled by a panel of industry experts at the London semi-final last month.

Her parents Sarah and Steve and brother Ben, 18 are excited about her reaching the final.

And she said she is not the only family member with an interest in technology - her dad works in IT and her brother is studying it at college.

She said: “I’ve got a laptop of my own now, but when we only had one computer, we used to have a lot of arguments over who was going to use it.”

The Shop Idol ceremony, with champagne reception and dinner, is on June 7 at the Brewery in London’s financial district.
