Stour Centre opening date set for July
THE much-delayed Stour Centre re-opening finally looks set to take place in July, and Ashford council has announced a competition to celebrate.
Since building work began in January 2005, the project has been bedevilled by setbacks, including the discovery of asbestos on the site, and legal wrangles with architects Holder Mathias.
If the centre does open in July, it will be 16 months later than planned, and £3m over budget.
Despite all the problems, however, the council is confident enough in the new opening date for the centre that it has launched an art competition to find the first members of the public to take a dip in the refurbished pool.
The two winners of the contest, which is open to youngsters between the ages of eight and 16, will be the first to ride the 50-metre flumes that form the centrepiece of the new leisure pool.
They will also win passes for themselves and three friends for a VIP tour of the centre.
Drawings and paintings on the theme Sporty Ashford should be sent to Stour Centre Art Com- petition, Stour Centre, Tannery Lane, Ashford, TN23 1PL.
The competition is divided into two age groups, eight to 11 and 12 to 16. Two runners-up in each age group will be given free swim passes.
Entries should be on A4 paper, and the closing date is June 15.
