We’re talking sport and a chance to win top bike

Kentish Express Ashford & District - - News -

MAY I just start by thanking all of you who have got involved and responded to the subjects I have broached in my column. I really do appreciate it, so keep sending your thoughts in, otherwise I’ll be out on my ear. By the way, you don’t have to write just because you agree; I can take some criticism as well! Anyway, you may have heard me and Kirstyn on the radio recently, talking about a competition that Ashford Active, the borough’s sports partnership network, is running. Basically, if you are under the age of 16 and can think of an incredible question you’d like to ask Ashford’s very own Olympic gold medallist Jamie Staff, then Halfords will give a custom-built bike to the winner, that Jamie will hand over himself. Ashford’s Sporting Heroes is a celebration of all that is good in sport in our community and myself and Kirstyn feel honoured and indeed privileged to be involved on the night. We can’t wait to meet our “golden boy” Jamie and some fantastic local talent from all spectrums of the sporting world. The council is really pulling out all the stops for this night and special thanks go out to Simon Harris who is the sports operations development officer and Active Ashford co-ordinator. Good work mate! We truly are blessed where we live to have so many options in the sporting curriculum and there is no reason why we can’t all be involved. We have Ashford Rugby Club in Canterbury Road, that has teams at all levels and is very successful. The same can be said of Ashford Hockey Club in Bull Lane, a fantastic set up which will not be bettered anywhere in the county. Ashford Cricket Club who have merged with The Old Stacians have a great academy system for the kids and the grown-ups aren’t doing too bad either. You’ve got the boxing club, swimming club, athletics club and football club in Ashford. I could go on and on. We tend to forget just how spoilt for choice we are these days and how truly lucky we are to have so much going on in our community. If you wish to join in the competition to win the bike from Jamie, then “log on or jog on” to www.activeashford.co.uk and if you wish to comment on this or any other column I’ve written, or you have any ideas for further gripes or celebrations then check out our website at www.kentishexpress.co.uk
