DEPUTY Mayor Cllr John Holland (Ind) questioned the cabinet about a story on the market in the latest edition of Ashford Voice, the council magazine, which portrayed the move as a success but quoted just a single trader. He said: “I am unhappy that Voice is being used as a method of propaganda providing a rosy picture when all is clearly not well.” Portfolio holder for the market Cllr Mike Claughton (Con) welcomed the progress report and claimed that in talking to stallholders he had gained a different picture from the one he read in the press. He said: “If you spread doom and gloom you will never meet the challenge. “It’s too early to draw conclusions in this time of economic downturn and close monitoring of the situation will continue.” Deputy leader Cllr Paul Bartlett (Con) admitted: “We need to commit to producing the infrastructure for traders.”
