Beach duo tri­umph in tro­phy play-off

THERE was an all-Lon­don Beach fi­nal in the Bul­mers Pairs cham­pi­onship this year which was played at El­fordleigh Golf Ho­tel in Ply­mouth.

On a hot day the two pair­ing went head to head with an­other tie break needed to de­cide the tro­phy.

Youngsters Shane Stol­wor­thy and Con­nor Roles emerged vic­to­ri­ous in the play-off against de­fend­ing cham­pi­ons Rob Sims and Brian Chip­per­field.

The pre­vi­ous day it was Sims (h8) and Chip­per­field (h12) who had emerged on top on the 19th in their semi-fi­nal against the Lon­don Beach duo Alan and Paul Brewer.

In the other semi-fi­nal Stol­wor­thy (h5) and Roles (h18) saw off the Sene Val­ley/Hythe Im­pe­rial duo Paul War­bur­ton (h22) and Phil Tay­lor (h9) fin­ish­ing two holes up on the fi­nal green.

In all 96 pair­ings started the com­pe­ti­tion back in May. The cham­pi­onships was spon­sored by Scot­tish Courage Brew­eries, Lon­don Beach Golf Ho­tel, El­fordleigh Golf Ho­tel and Ken­hire Ve­hi­cle Hire.

THE fi­nal sin­gles com­pe­ti­tion of the year at Ash­ford Golf Club saw many times win­ner and for­mer club cham­pion Robert Young carry off the Hy­land Cup.

The play­ers’ ex­cel­lent round of 70 pro­duced a nett score of 166, two shots ahead of John Crid­land (18), Shawn Cooper (11) and past cap­tain Nigel Dig­wood (16).

Andy Rus­sell (13), David Knight (15) and Peter Leckie (12) were back in the club­house with 69.

In-form golfers Kevin Bar­ton (15) and Gra­ham Tick­ner (13) were on 70.

The top 10 com­pleted by for­mer lo­cal soc­cer leg­ends, Paul Young and Alan Tay­lor in fin­ish­ing on a nett 71.

The 19 hand­i­cap­per Al­fie Ames was the win­ner of the vet­er­ans cen­te­nary plate. An ex­cel­lent to­tal of 43 points was far too good for the rest of the field, who trailed in his wake.

Jim Sy­monds and Dougie Fisher, play­ing off 19 hand­i­caps, fin­ished the rounds on 38 points. Fourth was Mervyn Barnes in card­ing 26 points.

Cap­tain Alan Wood (17), Peter Walsh (15) and Berti Tutt (11) signed scored for 35 points, The top 10 leader board was com­pleted by Alf Down­ing, John Pick­worth and Roy Burt.

The Au­gust ju­nior Medal was col­lected by DJ Ben­nett with a fine nett 69, re­duc­ing his hand­i­cap to nine. Sec­ond placed Tommy Muchmore also sees his hand­i­cap clipped to eight af­ter a score of 71. Two points away in third came Chris Long.

Jenny Ursell (15) con­tin­ued her ex­cel­lent form by winning the Startup Cup, a bo­gey com­pe­ti­tion, with a su­perb plus 5. Ruth Pick­worth (21) was the run­ner-up with plus 1.

Beryl Suther­land (20), who is hav­ing a pur­ple patch, won the fi­nal of the Golf Ball Cup by de­feat­ing Eileen Whar­ton (19), who will re­ceive the Plate. Beryl also won the Septem­ber Stable­ford with an out­stand­ing 42 points. Sal Sheringham (17) came sec­ond in the Sil­ver Divi­sion with 38 points.

Judi Fisher (23) won the bronze divi­sion with 37 points and Mar­garet Olsen (27) was sec­ond with 36 points on the back nine from the ever-im­prov­ing Sue Box­all (36).

The scratch prize of the se­nior cham­pi­onship was won by Hazel Bris­tow with a gross 87. Karen Pick­er­ing (17) won the hand­i­cap cup with a nett score of 75 on the back nine from Jenny Ursell (14).

LAST Fri­day was the an­nual chal­lenge match be­tween the Past Cap­tain’s team, led by Jim McCormack, and the Cap­tain’s team at Ten­ter­den Golf Club.

In a break from tra­di­tion, Jim in­vited the Club Pro­fes­sional to part­ner him against the Cap­tain Ge­off Mitchell.

How­ever, Ge­off brought in Chrissie Kem­s­ley from the ladies, Ju­nior Cap­tain Terry Eady, Head Green­keeper Gary Branchett, Stew­ard Ray Henry and Vic­tor Pilipovic, Keith and Kevin Steele and Stu­art Pear­son as well as se­cret weapon Peter Mitchell, this year’s Welsh Se­nior Open Cham­pion, to be his part­ner.

This top pair eas­ily dis­posed of Jim and Kyle 4 & 3. Ge­off Bracher and Peter Knott and Tony Walker and Roger Withey, of the Past Cap­tains, man­aged to tie their games.

The fi­nal score did not re­flect the close­ness of the games with the Cap­tain’s team com­ing out on top 4–1.
