Players pitch in for this year’s mini World Cup
THE annual mini World Cup football tournament organised by Kent Police and Charlton Athletic community services was held on Sunday at Stanhope mini soccer centre. Teams from the Gurkha, Malayalee and Kurdish Gaxmudian communities competed. Community liaison officer PC Maria Hales said: “Despite the weather the players were enthusiastic and the tournament produced some very close games. We all enjoyed it.” The Gurkhas won the challenge cup and winners’ gold medals, with the Malayalee team receiving silver runners-up medals. The mini World Cup is played as part of Black History month. This year it was sponsored by Ashford Community Safety Unit.
