Play­ers pitch in for this year’s mini World Cup

THE an­nual mini World Cup foot­ball tour­na­ment or­gan­ised by Kent Po­lice and Charl­ton Ath­letic com­mu­nity ser­vices was held on Sun­day at Stan­hope mini soc­cer cen­tre. Teams from the Gurkha, Malay­alee and Kur­dish Gax­mu­dian com­mu­ni­ties com­peted. Com­mu­nity li­ai­son of­fi­cer PC Maria Hales said: “De­spite the weather the play­ers were en­thu­si­as­tic and the tour­na­ment pro­duced some very close games. We all en­joyed it.” The Gurkhas won the chal­lenge cup and win­ners’ gold medals, with the Malay­alee team re­ceiv­ing sil­ver run­ners-up medals. The mini World Cup is played as part of Black His­tory month. This year it was spon­sored by Ash­ford Com­mu­nity Safety Unit.
