Reviving a country craft in retirement

ROGER Nelson-Smith, churchwarden at St Nicholas’ Church in Pluckley, must have one of the more unusual retirement hobbies. His peaceful pastime has been making dovecotes in his garage workshop for several years. It is his proud boast that no two have ever been exactly the same as he never works from drawings and still hopes to create the perfect construction by eye alone. Roger says that having been connected with the land all his life, he is anxious to keep at least one country craft and tradition alive. It seems somehow appropriate, too, for a churchwarden to devote much of his spare time to building dovecotes, one of which stands in the churchyard at Kingsnorth. Despite his skills he keeps no doves himself. He said: “I have no live birds but I do have a few plastic ones.”
