Run­ners rise to chal­lenge

STEVE Hick­man trav­elled to the Isle of Wight for the an­nual South East Fell Run­ning Cham­pi­onship over a pe­riod of two days. On the first day Steve was joined by Ash­ford and District Road­run­ner club­mates Ali­son Draper and Nina Davies in the first event, a run up the steep Bonniface Down from Vent­nor and re­turn cov­er­ing a dis­tance of three miles. Steve recorded a time of 26 min­utes, Ali­son and Nina 27:58. On the sec­ond day Steve ran the ex­tremely tough half marathon, which in­cluded steep up and down hills, clock­ing a su­perb 1:59:23, the first time he has been un­der two hours for the event af­ter seven years of try­ing. On the Sun­day four mem­bers ran the 15-mile Quick­sand event in Thanet. Ja­son Win­dle fin­ished in a time of 2hrs 8mins 56secs. Other times were Ed­ward Rodger 2:28: 31, Clare Jenk­ins 2:33:03 and Lynn Beau­mont 2: 39:59.

ASH­FORD work­ing mother Jo-Ann Perry has achieved an amaz­ing suc­cess by com­plet­ing the gru­elling UK Iron­man triathlon at Sher­bourne in Dorset. It was not only her first Iron­man but her first triathlon event. The race con­sists of an open wa­ter lake swim of 2.4 miles, hilly cy­cle ride of 112 miles and fi­nally a hilly marathon run of 26.2 miles. Her train­ing with the Ash­ford Tri Club proved es­sen­tial in pre­par­ing for this de­mand­ing trial. She com­pleted the course in a ter­rific 15 hours and 48 min­utes.
