Captain claims the honours
ASHFORD Indoor Bowls Club opened their season with the traditional president versus captain match. Captain Ken Morgan’s team defeated president Eileen Peck’s team by four-and-a-half rinks to one-and-a-half. On the Sunday the Ashford men entertained the Kent county president’s team. For the first time since the club opened five years ago, Ashford defeated the county team by 123 shots to 118, winning on three rinks and losing on three rinks. The highest winning rink was skipped by Tom Wiggins, who won 31-13. The other winning skips were Ian Payne and Roger Coker. The highest winning rink for the county was skipped by Eric Peacock. The first Kent League match of the season was on Saturday at Folkestone, who were last season’s league runners-up. Ashford did better than in previous years, winning on two rinks and losing on five. The overall score was 112-147 to Folkestone. Ashford started well and after 10 ends were winning on six rinks and only losing on one. However, Folkestone’s strength and experience showed in the second half and they pulled away. Ashford’s winning skips were Vic Steeple and Keith Rich. Two of the other rinks were close scores. Ken Hurran’s rink lost by only one shot and Tom Wiggins by three shots.
