ASH­FORD In­door Bowls Club opened their sea­son with the tra­di­tional pres­i­dent ver­sus cap­tain match. Cap­tain Ken Mor­gan’s team de­feated pres­i­dent Eileen Peck’s team by four-and-a-half rinks to one-and-a-half. On the Sun­day the Ash­ford men en­ter­tained the Kent county pres­i­dent’s team. For the first time since the club opened five years ago, Ash­ford de­feated the county team by 123 shots to 118, winning on three rinks and los­ing on three rinks. The high­est winning rink was skipped by Tom Wig­gins, who won 31-13. The other winning skips were Ian Payne and Roger Coker. The high­est winning rink for the county was skipped by Eric Pea­cock. The first Kent League match of the sea­son was on Satur­day at Folke­stone, who were last sea­son’s league run­ners-up. Ash­ford did bet­ter than in pre­vi­ous years, winning on two rinks and los­ing on five. The over­all score was 112-147 to Folke­stone. Ash­ford started well and af­ter 10 ends were winning on six rinks and only los­ing on one. How­ever, Folke­stone’s strength and ex­pe­ri­ence showed in the sec­ond half and they pulled away. Ash­ford’s winning skips were Vic Steeple and Keith Rich. Two of the other rinks were close scores. Ken Hur­ran’s rink lost by only one shot and Tom Wig­gins by three shots.
