Seanla double unable to save Town Trophy hopes
ASHFORD TOWN crashed out of the FA Trophy at the first hurdle on Saturday, going down 5-3 at Ryman League Division 1 North side Great Wakering Rovers.
New signing Claude Seanla secured a second brace in as many games, but by the time sub Andy Doerr scored Town’s third late on, the Essex side were already cruising on the back of a Neil Richmond quadruple and a Jimmy Webb strike.
The home side’s first goal came after 16 minutes. Sean Ray, attempting to put the ball behind for a corner, failed to get enough on his header. Keeping the ball in play, Rovers’ Dan Jones crossed for Richmond to score.
A second goal for Rovers came four minutes later. Webb picked up the ball in space on the left before chipping the ball in for Richmond to head home his second.
Ashford battled back to reduced the arrears on 37 minutes when Seanla’s volley found the net after Tony Browne’s right wing cross was laid off by Anthony Hogg.
Mitchell Sherwood and Daniel Brathwaite went close to levelling the scores before half time, but soon after the break Rovers were back on top. Richmond racing on to a through ball before calmly placing his shot beyond the on-rushing Jamie Riley.
It was 4-1 when Richmond’s low shot from the edge of the area found the bottom corner of the net.
Seanla grabbed his fourth in two games, following a Doerr pass, to make it 4-2.
But Rovers weren’t finished, Webb finding the net for their fifth after being teed up by Mark Cartlidge.
Doerr’s 88th-minute consolation rounded off the scoring as he turned a Paul Jones centre in from close range.
It was a disappointing early exit from the Trophy for Town who have a poor record in the competition over the years.
Scott Bouvier was Town Reserves’ hat-trick hero in the 5-2 win over Ramsgate at Homelands on Saturday
